Once upon a time, three African fighters successfully grabbed UFC championships and reigned together in their respective divisions. Their names were Kamaru Usman, former UFC welterweight champion; Israel Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion; and Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion. They supported each other on the way to the top, even before achieving success—especially in the case of Kamaru Usman and Francis Ngannou, who were both in the UFC before Israel Adesanya joined. Unfortunately, they all lost their titles in the same year in 2022.
Kamaru Usman was finished by a brutal knockout against Leon Edwards in a fight he was dominating until the final 50 seconds of the fifth round when Edwards landed a violent head kick, ending Usman’s reign. Israel Adesanya, in similar fashion, lost his title to Alex Pereira in the fifth round of a fight he was clearly winning. Although Adesanya recaptured his title against Pereira the next year in 2023, he lost it again three months later to Sean Strickland by decision—a fight he would later regret taking, as he should’ve known that being too active can be detrimental. Francis Ngannou, on the other hand, had to relinquish his title due to unsolvable differences with Dana White and the UFC, and he is now fighting in the PFL.
Despite everything, recent events in MMA could potentially signal a return of these three African legends to the top of the sport. So, is all hope lost to see the 3 Kings at the top of the sport? That’s what we’re going to try and figure out in this article.
Kamaru Usman
Lately, Kamaru Usman has been taking a break and observing the welterweight division. He was waiting to see the result of the next welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad, which took place on July 27th, 2024, in Manchester, England. In impressive fashion, Belal Muhammad dominated the welterweight champion and won a decision against Leon Edwards to become the new welterweight champion.
Kamaru and Leon have already fought three times, and the UFC tends not to book fighters for a fourth bout when the trilogy has a clear winner. Therefore, Belal dethroning Leon Edwards was the perfect opportunity for Kamaru because he now has the possibility of getting a shot at the welterweight title again.
Right now, the welterweight title picture seems to indicate that the very impressive, undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov is the next challenger for the title. However, Kamaru Usman and Belal Muhammad have captured the attention of fans and media alike with a back-and-forth via Twitter, and a few shots exchanged through podcasts and interviews since the fight.
At the moment, Kamaru is on a three-fight losing streak, having lost his title to Leon, then losing the rematch, and also losing a decision to Khamzat Chimaev in a short-notice fight at middleweight. It seems unlikely that he will get the next title shot, but he’s a much bigger name than Shavkat Rakhmonov, and a fight between him and Muhammad seems more lucrative for the company than the Shavkat fight right now.
Besides, the Khamzat Chimaev fight was a favor to the UFC to save the show after Paulo Costa pulled out of his fight against Chimaev, so the UFC might be thankful enough to give Usman a title shot. There are two potential scenarios for Kamaru to get back to the throne: the UFC could just offer Kamaru the shot for being a great champion, especially if Belal is asking for the fight for his own legacy, or Kamaru could have to win one fight in the top five against either Jack Della Maddalena (who is reportedly injured) or Shavkat Rakhmonov if the UFC decides to make a title eliminator instead of giving the shot directly to Usman.
Another option could be a fight against Ian Garry, the number seven ranked UFC welterweight, who is considered one of the hottest prospects in the division and is undefeated. However, it’s generally believed by fans and the MMA community that Ian’s next fight should and probably will be against the now former welterweight champion Leon Edwards, given that the two have had issues in the past and kind of dislike each other. Since Ian Garry is considered a future champion and Leon is the number one ranked welterweight, it seems like the perfect fight to make for both.
In any case, the path back to the title has never been clearer for Kamaru Usman, and he hasn’t looked this motivated in a long time. So, there’s still hope for Kamaru Usman at the top.
Israel Adesanya
After losing his title for the second time, this time to now former middleweight champion Sean Strickland, Israel Adesanya decided to take a break from mixed martial arts. According to him, injuries and overactivity were the main reasons for his disappointing performance against Sean Strickland, so he decided to take the time to ensure his body and mind were healthy. He also decided to gain some muscle, increase his strength, and refine his techniques.
Having been a great two-time middleweight champion, the UFC decided to give him the next title shot against one of his fiercest enemies, Dricus Du Plessis, who took the belt from Sean Strickland via split decision in January 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. Sean Strickland was originally a replacement for Dricus Du Plessis and ended up winning against Israel Adesanya, but now that Dricus is champion, this fight is back on the table, and the UFC decided to make it right away without making Israel fight to earn a shot—which is fair, given all his accomplishments.
The fight is taking place this weekend, on Saturday, August 17th, 2024 in Perth Australia, and if Israel Adesanya wins, he will be back at the top of the division once more.
Francis Ngannou
Francis Ngannou has had a tumultuous past two years with some very high highs and some very low lows, but overall he’s done pretty well for himself financially. After a dispute that forced him to leave the UFC and relinquish his title, Ngannou was drowned in criticism for his choice to leave the UFC to pursue a career in boxing. Ngannou defied the odds in a way never seen in combat sports and acquired everything that people said was impossible for him to get. Not only did he earn amazing purses, but he also impressed in his fight against Tyson Fury, who was still champion at the time and considered the best heavyweight in the world.
Unfortunately, 2024 wouldn’t be as successful for Ngannou. Despite earning a very huge purse for his fight against Anthony Joshua, he got knocked out in impressive fashion by Joshua in the second round. As if this wasn’t enough, Ngannou also lost his son a few months later.
Until very recently, the UFC was adamant that Ngannou was never coming back and would never fight for them again, and Dana White several times absolutely ridiculed the idea of a cross-promotion event with the PFL, which would allow Jon Jones, the current UFC heavyweight champion, and Francis Ngannou to finally fight. However, according to Joe Rogan, the UFC is now open to the possibility of cross-promotion. If true, that would mean that if Francis manages to beat his next opponent, Renan Ferreira, this could potentially convince the UFC to finally make the fight between him and Jones. And if Ngannou were to beat Jones, he would be back at the top of the sport and would be considered the greatest heavyweight of all time in MMA.
Conclusion
If all of this occurs, all three champions will be back at the top of the sport. But as Israel Adesanya, the Last Stylebender, likes to say: “The 3 Kings will always be a thing no matter what, belt or not.”
